Four out of five of the most dangerous pieces of malware in 2020 were ransomware and it’s predicted that in 2021, a business will be attacked by ransomware every 11 seconds.

When it comes to ransomware, organisations large and small are both highly vulnerable to the threat.

Why are ransomware attacks increasing?

In recent years there’s been a massive increase in digital sharing. More and more people are using online portals to upload files. There has also been an increase in the number of people working from home, using potentially unsecure workstations, especially since the recent global pandemic.

The rise of digital currencies, such as Bitcoin, has also provided cyber-criminals with a relatively safe and risk-free mechanism for obtaining payment and remaining anonymous.

And, it’s becoming more common for people to have un-patched and out-of-date software and devices that are particularly vulnerable to attacks.

In addition to this, cyber-criminals are getting cleverer with their targeting of specific organisations, using highly sophisticated and advanced attacks that easily beat traditional detection methods. An example of this is Emotet malware.

Simulated ransomware attack

Emotet is one of the most active pieces of malware ever seen and is used to carry a wide range of payloads including ransomware. Despite the fact it was first detected in 2014, it is commonly modified to evade detection-based defenses and deliver its payload.

In a recent demonstration, our Deep Secure researchers tailored an Emotet variant to simulate a ransomware attack and concealed it inside a Microsoft Word document. They then ran it by a website that hosts all the major anti-malware technologies on the market to see if it evaded detection. When they did this, only 50% of detection-based technologies identified it as a threat. The remainder thought the file was safe to open!
